Children on the spectrum have unique nutritional needs owing to gastrointestinal and systemic metabolic differences. Children on the spectrum have increased intestinal permeability, decreased digestive enzyme secretion, and alterations to their gut microbiota. These factors affect the absorption of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
Altered levels of many vitamins and essential minerals have been documented in these children including vitamin A, niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), thiamine (B1), biotin, calcium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Children on the spectrum have been shown to have a variety of metabolic differences that affect methylation and transsulfuration biochemistry, oxidation, and energy production.
Many of these metabolic challenges may respond to robust vitamin and mineral repletion such as with methyl folate and vitamin MB12 for methylation support, vitamin B6 in a bioactive form for transsulfuration, and antioxidants. Daily micronutrient supplementation for children on the spectrum is warranted to support healthy vitamin and mineral levels and support affected metabolic pathways.
